I have fond memories from my childhood when my father skillfully crafted furniture from raw timber. Watching the transformation of wood into tables, chairs, cabinets, and sofas always left me in awe.
Childhood recollections are often intertwined with the scent of freshly shaved timber and the symphony of sawing sounds.
Now, as a designer, my admiration for the organic allure of wood remains unwavering. The warmth and natural fragrance exuded by wooden furniture captivate me.
Wood originates from forests, just as humans are nurtured by nature. Perhaps our affinity for wood stems from this intrinsic connection to the natural world.
Throughout my academic and professional journey as a designer, I've delved into the rich legacy of Chinese craftsmanship in architecture and furniture. The intricate tenon-and-mortise joint, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese design, has always piqued my curiosity.
The elegance and artistry of these joints, portrayed in two-dimensional drawings within literature, are truly captivating. Yet, visualizing these structures in three dimensions presents a challenge, especially with more complex designs that seem inscrutable.
This pondering led me to a realization: Could modern technology, such as computer-generated 3D models, offer a clearer insight into classical tenon-and-mortise joints?
Moreover, envisioning these joints as interactive digital recreations on platforms like iPhones and iPads akin to gaming experiences ignited my imagination!
Sometimes, I contemplate the prospect of pursuing carpentry or craftsmanship one day.
Following six months of rigorous preparation and dedication, my team has brought this vision to fruition:
- A high-fidelity 3D model showcasing 27 classical tenon-and-mortise joint structures segmented into their constituent parts;
- Elegant designs highlighting the timber materials best suited for these joints;
- Comprehensive explanations on traditional carpentry tools in an engaging interactive format;
- Engaging visual narratives on the historical evolution of tenon-and-mortise joints;
- Seamless sharing capabilities across social networks.
This project celebrating the tenon-and-mortise joint structure is dedicated to all enthusiasts of nature, woodwork, and design. Let's savor the aesthetic allure of these exquisite joints together!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported us on this journey!
